This week we start Season Two of Attack On Titan with S2E1 "Beast Titan" S2E2 "I'm Home" and S2E3 "Southwestward". We discuss seeing Jack White live, the art of editing, and enjoying Season Two's changes.
Hello and welcome to season eleven of I'm Your Buddy with Nick and William, a podcast where two best friends are watching and discussing the anime series Attack on Titan. I'm William who's never seen this show. And I'm Nick who has also not seen the show. And today we're gonna start season two with episode one, Beast Titan, episode two, I'm home, and episode three, Southwestward. One word, southwestward. Southwestward. Directionally. Yeah. Yes. I felt like I said it weird.
SPEAKER_00I think as they say in Wild Wild West, these new titles are a breast of fresh ass uh to me. Hell yeah. Who says that? Will Smith? No. I can't remember. It might be Kevin Klein, I can't remember. But uh Salma Hayek. Yes, yeah. Instead of a breath of you like that movie. As a kid, I loved that movie. Absolutely. It's not great. Seen it in 30 years, I don't know. Whenever it came out, but yeah, I thought it was great. I love that Wild West shit. It was a fun kids movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Like a stupid, silly movie. Absolutely. I liked Shanghai Nun. I thought Shanghai Nun was awesome. Oh, me too. Yeah, that's great. When he makes the the rope and the horseshoe and he beats everybody up with that. Yeah. It's like, yeah, this is this is an awesome movie.
SPEAKER_00I know. I was I was already kind of like a Jackie Chan snob as a kid. Like his early stuff, like his act his legitimate Hollywood stuff, I did enjoy, but it wasn't the same. It was the same. I know. Because it's not his stunt team and it's not him directing or or you know the directors he's worked with for a long time back in Hong Kong. So like even as a kid, I was like, oh, these ones aren't as good. Yeah, it wasn't it also wasn't enough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like I remember uh rush hour.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02And my dad was excited to see it. We went and saw it. I thought it was cool, but every fight I felt like it was too slow. Like he wasn't actually hitting people. I could tell as a kid when he's in the the pool hall and he's hitting people. I was like, I don't know, man. This doesn't feel the same. It's cool, it's not the same. And Chris Ducker's.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's not police story, it's not a bunch of yeah, I mean it's just yeah, those those are classics. Yeah, yeah, and even as a kid, I you knew I knew the difference somehow. Yeah, you you could see it. Yeah, yeah, for sure. You could feel it, um, even if you didn't know why. But yeah, Shang Shangh, I remember enjoying Shanghai Noon scene in the theaters and Shanghai Nights. I remember seeing and enjoying not as much as the first one, but and they talked about doing a a third one, but yeah, you know, I think I think the world is good. We're fine, yeah.
SPEAKER_02We're fine. Same with rush hour four, I think. They s they always talk about doing another rush hour. I was like, who wants I don't know, who wants that? That sounds weird. Yeah, exactly. Who knows? Where's that on someone's like list of oh I can't wait for another rush hour?
SPEAKER_00I think the third one made a lot of money, uh, but I don't remember though. Maybe half a million, half a billion or something, or maybe it's two hours. I think maybe it was 250.
SPEAKER_02I think I remember this weird movie trivia thing of like no, it was a hit, something like that. I hated the second one.
SPEAKER_00Rush Howard 2. I don't remember the plots of any of them.
SPEAKER_02Even as a kid, I had that, I guess like a you said snob, I was gonna use the same word, but that pretension of I hated when a sequel was just a rehash. Okay. Where's the same joke, but now Jackie Chan says it to Chris Tucker? Like I always hated that. I remember this was an argument with our Carl's bed friends. I don't like D2 the Mighty Ducks.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02And all the kids, as a kid, that was the fun one. I hated, it was too silly. It was too gimmicky.
SPEAKER_00Leaned into the Disney-ish of it at all.
SPEAKER_02There's a cowboy and he lasso's a guy on the ice because one of the kids is a Texan, like everyone's a archetype. Yeah. I was like, I as a kid, I hated that. I was like, this is no, get him out. Put them in the box. I like D3.
SPEAKER_00It was angsty. That's the college one. Olympics one?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02No, D2's the Olympics one. Oh, okay. And that's what I hated. Team USA, so it's like a c uh high school, like a Texas kid, a Chicago kid. Oh, okay. Like it was all the people. What's the third one about then? The third one is like a heavy drama where they go to college now, and the coach is like a no bullshit hard ass, and the main kid, um Pacey Witter from Dawson's Creek, he doesn't get along with him because he's doing like old school Mighty Duck gimmick stuff. Okay. And the coach is like, Quit the shit. We played hockey. And they couldn't like And Emilio's not in the third one. He has a cameo. Oh, okay. He comes back and they sit and he goes, Yeah, he's a hard ass, like douchebag guy because his daughter died in a wreck or something, and he's mean. And he's like, Oh, okay. And then they just play like real hockey. Ah, okay. It was like angsty and like too serious. Okay, that was the one I liked as a kid.
SPEAKER_00I was like, that was cool. Yeah. I don't, yeah, fuck. I don't even remember. Yeah. I don't think I saw the third one. That's good. Watch the third one. Yeah, we'll we'll do the Disney uh 90s films uh for a season of the podcast.
SPEAKER_02Well, hold on. It wouldn't be crazy. We should do a mini, like uh two episodes. I pick three sports movies, you pick three sports movies. That could be fun. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00That wouldn't be bad. I know. The same ones, yeah. We both pick money ball. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you you go money ball, raging bull, and I don't know, another prestigious sports movie you Ollie and I'll just do remember the Titans, miracle D3, yeah, D3 Money Docks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, they said that could be a fun little detour for sure. I'm sure people would hop on that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Sports movies are cool, they work for me every time. Yeah, yeah, that's the daddy's train that works for me as a sports movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's good structure for underdog comeback kind of stuff. It's fun, yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. So, how have you been, William? We're actually recording this before the previous episode comes out. We're we're kind of getting ahead. We skipped a week because uh you've been very busy with work, uh, but we're trying to get ahead because I'm getting surgery in a couple weeks.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, and I I forgot about that part. I'm okay. It's just uh super busy. And then I don't know, man. Like I took uh my my therapist had a sick kid, so we took a week and I was like, yeah, fine, whatever. I'm super busy too. And then the next week I couldn't I have a sick you have a sick patient. Well, I I was busy and I was out of town, so I couldn't do so. I went two weeks and I was like, I'm fine, life is so busy, it's whatever. And I went in feeling okay. Yeah, I was like, I got plans to talk about because like I went to my grandparents' 70th wedding anniversary. There's stuff to talk about there. Yep, I went to a friend's wedding, there's definitely stuff to talk about there. That feeling of like when you're around people, you can feel extra lonely. Sure, you know what I mean? Like, I sat at a table with my co-workers, and you have that thought of like I could leave right now, like I could leave early. It doesn't change anybody's night. Like they have the same night. I'm not involved enough where it's like, oh, we miss. I was like, I talk a little, I'm not dancing. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Like they're not close friends, they're exactly friends.
SPEAKER_02And there's some of them I wish I was closer with, but it's just that idea of like it's easier to feel lonely when you're actually around people interacting. Because you get in your head and you're like, I'm not. Or I wish I was more, or I wish they all of that wishing and hoping stuff. So I was like, ah, it made me feel weird, but it wasn't. I it was whatever. I had stuff to talk about, but instead I got in trouble, and I was told I can't cancel anymore, and I have to keep in yeah. Apparently, I thought I was supposed to be honest and tell my therapist what I'm thinking and what I'm doing. I thought this was a safe space where I could just say whatever I'm thinking and just kind of let it off the hook. Little did I know there's certain things you tell somebody and they go, Yeah, you're not supposed to do that. I didn't know there were things you're not supposed to do. You're not supposed to do certain things, Nicholas. I don't know if you've ever come across that in therapy.
SPEAKER_00Like it might be a short list. I guess it depends on the things, yeah, and it depends on what you've said, yeah, and if they're gonna report it to the authorities. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02And I I literally, like at a certain point, I was like, we're just shooting shit here. This isn't even what we're gonna talk about. And then I made the mistake of using a certain phrase, and she goes, You know, you said when it happens, and I was like, Yeah, I I guess. And so it was like, she was like, okay, this sounds different. I was like, Well, I mean, everything's on the table. Like, I could make a million dollars, I could play blackjack and win. I could move, I could get married, everything's on the table, right? So that's that's a thing on I was like, I don't know, what do you what do you want from me? And she's like, Well, let's talk about it. I was like, sure, let's talk about it. And then the more you talk about it, I was like, oh yeah, you're not supposed to do certain things because then it feels like a different kind of problem. Certain mental issues are a problem you're running from, certain ones are a problem you want to solve and overcome, and sometimes maybe something's a puzzle, and you're like, I just gotta make these pieces fit, and then I solve the puzzle. So you think well, no, uh, you know, I'm pretty sure about this one, there's a solve to the puzzle, and there's obstacles in the way, and then I was like, okay, well then I don't know, when you got time to kill on your drive home in traffic, you start thinking about ways to take pieces off the board to go, that's not my way anymore. And it's that talk of um removing barriers. But here's here's a motherfuck for you some barriers you're not supposed to actively try and remove, Nicholas. Do you know that? I did not know. Some barriers are not supposed to be putting active action into removing because then it feels like you're actively trying to accomplish something, yeah, and that's different from terms passive and active. Yeah. And I was like, I don't know. I thought we were just talking. Yeah, don't ask questions, you don't want to answer.
SPEAKER_00People were just asking her how to apply for a gun license.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's stuff like that. Yeah, yeah. Of like, we were talking about it, and I was like, okay, let's say I get sad because I'm not close to the people at work, and I wish I was closer because I interact with them so much, right? Sure. Well, what if tangentially another conversation we're also having is I'm having trouble at work. I want to move up, and I might not be able to because I don't have the respect in the clout with management. They might hold me back. Well, now the conversation is you might have to leave your job. If it's not a place that values you and it's holding you, it's keeping me in a negative headspace. Why don't you go find another job that does value you? Because that does exist. There are people that are more like-minded, there's somewhere that's less chaotic. Like everyone knows this. When you're having a hard time at work, it's always on the table, you could get another job. Sure. And then I was like, yeah, but like the people, the reality is, if you think about it, and we've all been here, you've been the person or the other, you've been both sides. How long do you really think they're gonna like think of me or talk about me if I got another job? A couple weeks. Like they're like, Oh, remember William? That's crazy, he left. Blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it depends on how close you are with them for sure.
SPEAKER_02Exactly my point. A couple weeks, and then people move on because work is busy. And I was like, that's a positive for why I should quit work. I can use that exact same logic, exact same wording, of course, but apply it to another thing and go, I just wiped 10 to 12 people off my board of well, you don't want to bum them out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I was like, so we're halfway there.
SPEAKER_00There's a you're always gonna use it as an excuse to tell yourself that you don't matter.
SPEAKER_02But I'm using your words. These aren't mine, these are your words. You're using secure logic to win an argument with your therapist. Absolutely. But I'm using this real thing, I'm applying it to another thing.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and I shouldn't probably think is the problem equal situations in any fucking way, shape, or form.
SPEAKER_02This is true.
SPEAKER_00But this is true. For the sake you'd rather win an argument than anything, then anything. This is you gonna give a shit about yourself.
SPEAKER_02No, this is the problem, and this is why this came up. This is what I'm doing. You'd rather be right. This is what I'm doing on my own time, not with her. Yeah, of course. This is the shit that goes on in your head. So when I tell her this, that's where she goes, you know this, like I'm concerned now. Like, we have to this is a different thing.
SPEAKER_00There's liability there. If she's a medical professional and she if she thinks you're a danger to yourself or others.
SPEAKER_02Hey, no. And I was like, nah, I'm fine, don't worry about it. I'm just kidding. This is traffic talk. We all have siffy silly traffic talk. I've had traffic talking what if what if Glenn Powell was filming a movie and his car broke down and I'm the only one that can help him.
SPEAKER_00Remember that one person who quit their job that I haven't thought about in a long time? Well, that didn't really matter to me. So they should just die, and then it won't matter to me either.
SPEAKER_02No, it's you telling me don't hold yourself back from quitting because you already feel you're not connected to them. So if it's better for you to quit the job and get a better job, don't stay at a shitty job because you think they're gonna miss you too much. No, take care of yourself and get a better job. Yes. You're also telling me they're not connected to you.
SPEAKER_00But you're also using the sound.
SPEAKER_02We switch the whole conversation and then you just switch the the get a better job. No, I replace that with something else, and then she goes, You can't do that.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's a different talk about it. And you're not only replacing what that is, you're also inverting the meaning of take care of yourself. Hey, I'm using your words.
SPEAKER_02You said take initiative, you said be more active, you said problem solve, removing obstacles, blaming your therapy. Hey, I'm these are your words. Your words, you don't like them, you think about what you said.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. She has to take into consideration the fucking poison chalice that her advice is going into. That is your brain. Yeah, that's true. I mean, that is on her. That is on her.
SPEAKER_02This makes a lot of sense.
SPEAKER_00She should be aware of how your brain at least somewhat functions.
SPEAKER_02You gave me something very, very clear and logical. You can't be mad at me that I'm using it and applying it for other things.
SPEAKER_00You'll use it for nefarious purposes.
SPEAKER_02I'll use it for all purposes. Positive, neutral, or maybe negative. And then who's to who's to say what's negative, Nicholas? Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_00It's all a point of view, isn't it? It's all perspective. If it makes you feel better.
SPEAKER_02If it stops the hurt, but it's I'm I'm being silly with it now, but it was one of those things where I'm like, at a certain point, I was there was a a slight moment where I was like, we are, I'm just I'm shooting the shit right now. And then she's like, no, we gotta talk about it. I was like, God damn, you're right. Okay, let's level set. I was like, so slow down.
SPEAKER_00And I was like, okay, boys are gonna get in trouble.
SPEAKER_02She said literally track. Literally, I was like, okay, chill, chho, chho, chho, chho, chho, chill. I was like, okay, let's stop. I'll take it serious now. And by serious, I mean tell you the better things to I was I'm always honest, but it was that thing of like, I don't know what you want from me. Like, um if you if you want me to say, I'll say. I'm not gonna lie. I love that's the truth. I'm not gonna lie and go, no, I'm fine. So don't think about it.
SPEAKER_00I love the I mean, obviously, I think our listeners have caught up on it, but just the irony of you starting with, oh, I hadn't been to therapy for two weeks, yeah, and I was going in feeling fine. Yeah, and then you have this specific argument about justifying justifying and making it your own death by comparing it to quitting your job, but still just palpably saying, Oh, I was fine though. I was fine. Like you were clearly in a good headspace when you're coming in and talking about that with your own.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that but that was the problem, and that's how we got here, is I told her, I was like, I don't think I'm all the way over April, what happened.
SPEAKER_00O'Neal?
SPEAKER_02I am not over April O'Neal.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, that is true. How are you gonna be over you having some kind of bottom hitting some low, you know?
SPEAKER_02Well, that's what I'm saying, is like that's what we started with. Is I was like, I'm I think I'm I'm still reeling with it more than I thought, and I'm thinking about it since because all of these thoughts and conversations we were having, this wasn't the stuff that was happening these weeks. I was like, I told her, I was like, some of this I was thinking like maybe in May, maybe in June. Like it's been an ongoing, it's in my mind, and that's what we talked about. The bigger picture is ever since April, there are things that are different, and I was admitting that to her of like, yeah, I we gotta keep talking about this because I thought I was more okay with it because life just kept moving and I'm busy and I just kept moving with life, and then it wasn't until I was talking to another friend and I admitted, I was like, Yeah, if I actually like really sit down and think about it, this is this is still here today. And I was like, Okay, yeah, I gotta talk about it. So, like the the serious is I'm coming to her saying, Hey, this is this is where I'm at, and I am thinking about it in a different way, and so we gotta we gotta square some of this away. So it was a very productive, but I'm I'm trying to be funny or silly about it, because I was just like, I don't know, man. There are things you're not supposed to be saying in that room. I just anyone going, everyone should go, but when you do go, there's the there are certain things. I think they're called mandatory reporters, is what they're called. Um man, it's fine. How have you been, man? How are you? Are you tired? How's your head?
SPEAKER_00Not good now.
SPEAKER_02What do you want to talk about?
SPEAKER_00Not good now. Oh god. It's fine. No, it's not. It is. Um it so is well we'll touch on some of that after the podcast. But um we saw a movie this past week. We did two things we gotta talk about. Oh, yeah, actually, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Do you want to talk about a movie or the other thing first? Either one. Which one's quicker, you think? I don't know. Let's start with I bought you tickets. And in my head, I was like, if I don't involve somebody, I won't go. Sure. I'll bail. Sure. The anxiety will win. Yep. And I want to go see a concert, and I'll think about parking and driving and the crowd and feeling weird in my head, and then I'll just bail. I'm a I'm a coward sometimes when it comes to big social things. I was like, I gotta involve somebody, and also I don't think you'll go unless I really push you to go. Yeah. So I just bought the tickets and me and you went and saw Jack White here at Albuquerque at Revel. It's my first time going to Revel. Same. It's my first time seeing Jack White. It is also one of the few. It's a smaller number than I wish, but it's one of the few times I've seen one of my absolute favorite musicians live.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's kind of a bucket list thing, kind of.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the the joke, and we've told it, and I can go quick, is like in high school, White Stripes was my favorite band. It was the band that I felt like I discovered on my own. I didn't hear anyone talk about it. I didn't know anyone that liked them. And I came across the music video, Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground. It blew me away. As a video Is that the Lego one?
SPEAKER_00No, that's fell in love with the girl.
SPEAKER_02But like it, yeah, there the visual, the everything. Oh, yeah, it's like the projection of the leaves of the house and he's coming home to the party. Yeah, it's Gondry. So, but yeah, this was like a canon event for me. This is my Jack White, this is Michelle Gondry, who directs Eternal Sunshine. This is like I'm in. This opened that thing in my brain of like, oh, this is cool and different. Because again, I grew up listening to rap in RB. The first piece of music I bought with my own money at six years old was Brandy's self titled cassette tape. Nice. I didn't know. What white people were doing for a while.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I missed the college rock in the 90s. I missed New Metal. I I came on board with some pop punk, and then I had to play catch up with a lot of that stuff.
SPEAKER_00And you've honed in on the whitest person.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the most pale of pales.
SPEAKER_00And it's literally in his name.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And so the White Stripes meant a lot to me. They were gonna play Albuquerque. We bought tickets in college. The night before they not only didn't play, but they broke up and never played another show ever again. Yes.
SPEAKER_00And it was heartbreaking. Infamous. Yes, in our friend group, yes. My life.
SPEAKER_02My favorite band said, Not only are we not playing, we're never gonna play anything ever again.
SPEAKER_00The day before you're about to play. So devastating.
SPEAKER_02This was it it felt like I was like, you just gotta do it. Don't even think about it. Do it, buy the tickets, go for it. And we did. Yes. How do you feel about the experience?
SPEAKER_00I thought it was great. Yeah. Minus being an older person. Them or us? No, uh, me, us. Uh, and having to stand on the floor for I mean, just stand in general. We got there at six and we left at like 11 or something like that, 11:30, maybe I can't remember. But standing for five hours on concrete, uh, that's a lot for a middle-aged just in line.
SPEAKER_02I was like, Yeah, my feet hurt. I wore the wrong shoes. I'm of the age where I said in my head, I wore the wrong shoes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's where I'm at.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd played or I'd ran four miles on the day before, and the morning of I played racquetball. So I was my body was physically tired, and then having to stand on concrete for five hours. That was the only negative. Uh, where I was just like, God damn it, this is why I don't go to shows. Yeah, but it was awesome. I thought it was really, really great. I'm not I mean, I really enjoy the white stripes, I've listened to their records over the years. Yeah, the rock on tours you like the first two. Really like the first two of those. He's a fucking legend, and I was very stoked to see him uh play. And we had you know, we're dead center basically, yeah. Pretty fucking close to so seeing him just fucking shred, and that's all he did all night. Uh it was it was really good. Yeah, I thought it was excellent. But what really matters is what you thought. Two things.
SPEAKER_02One, he did a thing that I it made me think of Jim Norton. Jim Norton's a comedian, and he's very filthy, and he's dirty, and he's irreverent, and when he goes on tour as a comedian, he specifically and on purpose tends to pick women openers Kelsey Cook, Amy, Annie Letterman, Amy Schumer for a while, Nikki Glazer, like he Nikki Glazer, he picks someone that is nothing like him to open. Yes. For two reasons. One, you don't want to get bored with the same material, you don't want a guy up there talking about his ugly dick and fart jokes, and then you come up and do another hour of ugly dick and fart jokes. Yeah, but also I think there is a purposeful of I need my crowd to always be ready for left turns. Louis uh CK is a big guy that does that too. Yeah, he always wants someone coming up of like, if I'm doing storytelling, I want a punchline guy in front of me. Steven Wright, Todd Barry, things, you know, stuff like that. You want variety because you don't want anyone complacent or going, I know exactly what I'm getting the entire night. Sure. Jack White's openers were two black women that played politically charged spoken word electronic music.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like dance, EDM kind of style.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely nothing like anything Jack White's ever been a part of.
SPEAKER_00Correct. They played a quick set, yeah, like 20, 30 minutes. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which was awesome, but it was so different. It kept me in that zone of like, I don't know what the fuck's happening.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what's coming, I don't know what's happening. The venue screwed up by during the breaks and the intermissions, and while you're coming into the venue, they're just playing garage rock. Yeah. And that was bugging me. They even played a few Jack White songs and it bugged me. So I was like, don't I hate that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I really hate that. It's like showing the trailer for a movie before you see the actual movie. I was like, don't do this.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_02So when he finally came out, heavy as hell.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like just immediately heavy and loud. Yep. And there is something to the way that he's always recorded. It's not overly produced. It sounds messy. It sounds raw and loud. So when he came on stage, I was like, this is exactly what I thought this would sound like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, this is cool. This is heavier than I think people give Jack credit for. Oh, yeah. Because he's the blues riff guy. But like, no, he these are heavy riffs in standard tuning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's one of the things that I came away with was he respects and showcases the power chord.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00And as much as he is a capital M musician, the motherfucker just jams out power chords. Who gives a shit? He knows. He knows how rock music works. And I fucking love him for that. Yeah. That was a huge thing. And just yeah, he it he I kind of said this after afterwards, but like he made me like his record, which I didn't, you know, which I've done. Does every riff need a song? Yeah. But seeing him play them live, it was so much more fun. He would improv, go off. It's almost like he, especially with like, you know, some of the white stripe songs that he played, it's almost like medley jams. Yes. He cuts out a couple verses, cuts out a couple choruses, speeds it up, yes, adds a different bridge, yeah, comes back. Yeah, it's he's having fun with it. It's one of those I mean, this I think it's extremely rare, and I can't think of anything, any other band that is like this that I've seen live off the top of my head, but he is better live than on the record. Absolutely. And which I usually 99% of bands I enjoy more on the record than live. Which I thought was fucking cool. That is how live music should be. Yeah. Or just live entertainment in general. Yeah. Right? I agree. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_02It's because it also, like you were saying, it feels organic of like I'm sure they they rehearse now, but it is a thing. It was notorious for the white stripes. They wouldn't have a set list, and they play what they feel in the moment type of thing. But with this, it just has that feeling of they want to go long, they want to go heavy, they want to go fast, they want to play it quiet, they go up and down, and there's range in there. And I was like, Again, it's unexpected. I don't know what's coming next. Yep, that's a big deal because it kept me engaged and it kept me kind of awestruck, where I was like, this is just even a song I don't love, or even a song I don't even know. He played a cover and I don't know the cover, and he played a few new songs, and I was like, I I'm sure I heard it, but I don't know this. Yeah, and I was like, This is so cool. I have no idea what's coming. And the other thing is I assumed, because he has so much to play, and then a new album just came out. I assumed I'm getting maybe two or three white stripe songs. I thought you would play one in the middle and two at the end, and of course you're on core, you gotta play Seven Nation Army and we go home. Yeah, exactly. That's what I just assumed. His second song to be Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground legitimately surprised me.
SPEAKER_00But he knows what he's doing.
SPEAKER_02He knows what he's doing, he knows what everyone's thinking.
SPEAKER_00He's like, let's lead off with the single from the new record, or one of the singles from the new records. I think there's two or three of them, which he played all three of them. You you have to, and then you have to go into a Y-stripe song. There's no fucking way. The truth though is you don't have to. He doesn't have to. There's a lot of bands. But I mean, he when you when you're a solo act like that and you have so many bands like he does, like you just play a fucking cool, heavy song that you just came out with, and then you fucking reel them in with an all-time fucking classic. I don't know. It's just smart set list. That's what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_02Is like you don't have to. He is so good at knowing the crowd, he knows when to surprise, yeah, he knows when to deliver what you want him to deliver. Yeah, and that was what stood out to me is he's doing both. You can tell he's playing what he wants to play the way he wants, but he's also like, I know what you guys are gonna enjoy. Yes, we're we're we're gonna do that too.
SPEAKER_00I need you to have a great time, and that's why it's so fucking impressive. It's because the way that a conscientious artist designs the track list on a record, yeah, that's how I felt he was designing the set list for the live show. Yeah, absolutely. Which I mean, even seeing bands that I love live, they'd never felt as curated the set list as this did. Yeah. You know what I mean? Agree, totally. There's just there's you can tell there is more intention behind the songs that he chose to play and in the order that he chose to play them, as opposed to the other ones. Where I'm I know other bands do are like, hey, we gotta do the slow song, then we'll do a fast song. You know what I mean? Like there's there's there's pacing for an hour, hour and a half type of uh experience. But it just felt so like natural, yeah. And it felt yeah, like so curated, so smart that it just it it was genuinely like a cool live experience. And we sh we should say this was all with yonder bags for our phones, so there was no cell phones, which we haven't seen, no cell. I don't know, never mind. I've never been to a concert with no cell phones, I've never because the first concert I went to was fucking you know, whatever AFI in 2003 or something, and even when we played shows when we were in high school, we had fucking phones. So this is the first time I've ever been to a concert without phones, and it made a huge fucking difference.
SPEAKER_02I don't film, but I would have been texting, I would have been talking to people and I would have got on Twitter for sure. I would I would have if I had my phone, I probably would have totally filmed the crowd chanting the melody for Seven Nation Army, yeah. The riff. I would have totally filmed that so I can send it to Sean or my dad or something. There's moments I would have definitely got like four or five seconds or whatever. I would have been texting people, I would have been checking Twitter in between the the bands and stuff, but like no, being locked in in a different way, and also just simply not distracted by anybody else filming or anyone else's phone up, like everybody's pulled in. I was like, this is it was great, it was so fucking cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, with small venues like that. I mean, that I would love to see more of that. It'd be so fucking cool. I mean, it's like a medium-sized venue, but but yeah, it's great. You couldn't do that in a fucking stadium.
SPEAKER_02No, you know, but like you said, this was a small venue for Jack White, who's played stadiums. Yeah, there's no screen on the side, yes, exactly. I'm just looking at Jack White. I'm looking at him, I'm not looking at anything else. But oh, to be honest, Jack and the drummer, and that was the other thing I wanted to talk about. It always warms my heart, no matter how long he's been away from Meg and the white stripes. He always plays to the drummer. Yeah, he has a mic at the drum set, and he always at multiple points throughout the songs, he'll go play facing the drummer. He's always done that with Meg because there was a connection, yeah, but he still does that, and every time he does it, I smile and I'm like, that's so cool. He cares about the band, yeah, he cares about the rhythm, he cares about what how they're working together. And uh Patrick Keeler, it's he's such a great drummer for Jack. He knows the dynamics, he knows the fast, the loud, the quiet like he does it very well, kind of sort of in my nerd brain reminds me of a Chad Smith. He knows how to work the dynamics of the song. Yeah, Chad's one of the very few drummers when John Frashante wants to improvise and do guitar solos. Chad's playing to the solo. Yeah, he doesn't just lay the bed for you to go and do your thing and then he comes back. If your solos fucking kicking holes in the wall, Chad's gonna go crazy with you.
SPEAKER_00It's always additive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's always he's running with you at your pace or he's accenting it perfectly. And I think a lot of other drummers, you always know when solo guitar solos are coming up because him and the bassists just sit and go, we gotta lay the bed. Yeah. Just hit the rhythm so people remember what song we're playing and let that guy have his moment. Yeah, it's a different song when Chad Smith plays with you to solos, and that the that reminds me of that someone that's very in tune with the moment.
SPEAKER_00They're all in the pocket.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00At all times, which you gotta be when you're playing with fucking Jack White, you know what I mean? He's he's literally he feels like he's orchestrating the entire band, even though it's it's literally a four piece. It does feel that way, but he feels like the conductor, yeah, because he's all around going and getting in everyone's, you know, playing to everyone. I was gonna say getting in everyone's face, that sounds rude, but but that's interacting with it.
SPEAKER_02And it's it's a callin' response with the keyboard or with the bassist at times, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Super cool. It's such a great time. I was just staring at his fucking hands playing guitar. I've never stared at a guitarist's strumming hand more than in this, where I'm just like he's it looks like he's playing so lightly, it's so fucking fascinating. And yeah, and his fucking hands, the veins in his fucking left hand just has because he's played guitar his whole fucking life and he's jacked, and he has no ass. Nope. And he's got a decent hog, not bad, yeah. When those tight jeans, I was like, okay. So pale.
SPEAKER_02Um they played a song from their first album, yeah. Like one of the first songs he's ever written. Yeah, he played it in 2026. That meant so much to me.
SPEAKER_00It's it's great.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, it was a great time. I uh we drove together. You dropped me off, I got my car, no music. Drove home just like oh yeah, that was awesome. I was riding high.
SPEAKER_00Good.
SPEAKER_02That was awesome. Yeah, I'm glad you had a good time.
SPEAKER_00Because yeah, it was it was great. I appreciate you buying a ticket for that. I mean, it's the least you could do after me taking you to falling in reverse.
SPEAKER_02I'm trying to make up for the greatness you provided me. Which Jackson's falling in reverse. I'm getting there. I'm getting there, right? I'm getting close. You know, yeah. Seven Nation Army versus I'm sick and twisted and I'm not gonna make my bed mom because the the clowns will eat me song. I'm getting there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we gotta point out the other thing we were feeling while we were there is god damn it, we are old. Yeah, there was honestly maybe 10, 15 people that we saw that were maybe in their 20s. Yeah, everyone else. There was literally elderly people.
SPEAKER_02There was a retiree that stood next to me, an old lady.
SPEAKER_00No way they weren't in their late 60s or early 70s. I that stood there the entire time.
SPEAKER_02For a moment, I thought if she falls, I have to let her fall because if I grab her, her skin will rip. That's how old she is. I was like, I'll pick her up off the floor from her joints, because if I grab her arms, her skin will rip. That's how old she is. It's paper thin. Oh, it's they were old. It was crazy. Yeah. Because yeah, he's a legacy act, it's blues rock. Yeah, so it's like people that are excited to tell you that they saw dire straits when they were an opening act. Like it's those type of old guys.
SPEAKER_00Literally, and and this is no, I don't mean this as any kind of shot at Jack White, but literally, if you told me all the same people were there to see Motley Crue at Code 66, Fog hat same fucking crowd. It was so odd, yeah. Very, very odd the makeup of people, but everyone seemed to have a fucking good time. Yeah. And yeah, it's just one of those things that makes me realize, like, oh yeah, we're we're almost 40.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we are old. Yeah, my my knee hurt for some reason. I was like, why is my knee hurt? I thought my back was hurt.
SPEAKER_00I could stand cross-armed long enough because it would hurt my back. Because you're pulling forward. Exactly. I was like, God damn it. Yeah, I get I'm the same. But yeah, so so fucking good. And speaking of good things, the second thing that we saw was Alejandro in Yunoritu's fucking TC movie.
SPEAKER_02Tom Motherfucking Have No Fear Like Tom Fucking Cruise.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_02We saw fucking Digger, which I saw previously. Okay, yeah. And I didn't tell you. Yes, yeah, yeah. The only thing I asked you is I went and saw Digger. Do you want to go see it? You invited me and I said, Yeah, I need to see it again because I need to figure some things out about it. Yeah. And then I asked you, has anything been spoiled?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Which I was like, uh, well, I don't know what the fuck there is to spoil.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There is stuff to spoil. And I actually a lot. I bet you a lot of our listeners, even our film friendly guys, haven't seen it. So I kind of don't want to spoil the whole thing. We'll talk about it spoiling. Um we'll we'll talk about it spoiler-free for now, and in a couple weeks, maybe we'll talk about spoilers, but we'll have to. I have to say I get how it's can be kind of divisive, but I think once you lock into it, I don't get why people wouldn't like it. I think people are just like, oh, it's not exactly what I thought it was gonna be, so that annoys me for some reason.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that's that is a big part of it. I think that's what it is. I think the other part is and I do I think it's as simple as I don't like what it is. I don't like the I don't like the yelling, I don't like the camera angles, I don't like the you know what I mean? Like the aesthetic, yes, yes, the style, I don't like it. But there's a purpose behind all of that, there's a purpose for all of that, but that's where like if someone comes across that way of going, yeah, I just don't like that. It's this movie reminded me only in um how abrasive style can be, Yorgos. Yes, where I think some of Yorgos' stuff, people go, I could like this story, I hate his camera, I hate his colors, I hate his faces. Yes, there's an off-putting, unsettling to everything he does, so I don't want to watch uh what's her name, Emma, whatever the hell, be a prostitute. Sorry, don't want to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I I mean I get that. I totally get that, but I'm infuriated how little money this movie has made. Yeah. And it's amazing. And I'm gonna say two things about it. Uh get him, Nick. I are my usual Nikki B up to hyperbole. You can fill this out on your I'm I'm your buddy bingo code. One thing bends them, one thing spreads them. Get him. One this is in Yurithu's best movie. Okay, he hasn't done anything this ambitious before. And what it's saying, what it's accomplished, how it looks, the scale is fucking huge, and the multi-layered, which yes, I know it's the same guy that Emores Peros. Yeah. Like I I know this is fucking multi-layered. Yeah. Really brilliantly executed, I think. Uh it's not perfect by any means, of course, but it's it's I think it's his best movie. And two, I know that this movie's m losing like $150 million. It only it's gonna be a huge bomb, already is a huge bomb. Maybe one of the biggest of all time, people are saying.
SPEAKER_02Hell yeah. But that makes me happy.
SPEAKER_00I think in 20 years it's gonna be a fucking cult classic. Absolutely. I think I think this is one of those great movies that's poorly reviewed and does very poorly at the box office that is gonna become like what are you talking about? That movie is fucking amazing uh in 2010 to 20 years. Like, no doubt in my mind. Maybe I could be wrong. I'm wrong about a lot of things all the fucking time, but it yeah, this is gonna be a fucking classic. No fucking doubt. It's so good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I the first time I saw it, nothing was spoiled for me. I didn't love the trailers. I'm here for the cast, I'm not here for Alejandro. Alejandro is so it I was gonna say hit or miss. He's not hit or miss. Alejandro is so miss with a few uh strokes of brilliance.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, he frustrates me so much. Yeah, he's not my guy, not even close, but I'm here for the cast and the fact that I'm like, I don't even I don't get it. What is this? Because I thought the trailers were. Weren't that great because it kept saying, like, oh, a uh an oil billionaire's gotta save the world. And then when I watched the trail, I was like, it doesn't look like he's saving anything. I don't know what that means. I'm curious what that means. How is he saving? I don't I don't get it. So that's where I was like, Yeah, I gotta see this. Of course, I'm gonna see it's Tom Cruise, John Goodman, Jesse Plemens. And then when things start unraveling, I felt my brain, I felt like I it was an active thing happening that I was noticing is I'm paying more attention now. Yeah, like I'm now active. I did the meme of I'm leaning forward now. Yes, going, okay, there's so much more going on than I first assumed. I bet you if I'm really focused in, there's gonna be so much I'm gonna catch in the background and on the sides and the visual and this. And I was right, there is so much going on. There's a thing where they just show like an insert shot of like a desk and what's on the desk. And I was like, that's telling a big part of this fucking story, what's on that desk.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And if I wasn't like really focused, that's just an insert shot of going, This is a guy's room, here's his desk. Yeah, now have the scene in the room. It was that type of setup, yeah. But I was like, even that saying something. Oh, yeah, the credits have something to say. I'll be honest, the credits have something huge to say.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02One of the biggest things this movie's doing is what it does in the credits, to be completely honest. And that was also the other thing, is I see a lot of movies in theaters. I don't always stay for the credits. Almost everyone stayed for the credits the first night I saw this. Oh, yeah. The whole time. Because either you're chewing on the movie, or at a certain point, I think everyone's like, something else might happen.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I like, yeah, I don't I I was worried, I didn't know how you'd feel about it, just because it is a crazy weird movie, and it's Alejandro, and me and you feel very similar to Alejandro.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I was like, Yeah, we should have fucking I should have texted Antonio too. Yeah, that was a good one. I would have loved to talk to him about that. I'll message him on Facebook or Instagram chance.
SPEAKER_02There's a big scene in the me first, there's a big scene in this movie, and it's in the trailer where he's in like the UN building and he's doing his big monologue speech. The first time I saw it, I was like, that's a Tom Cruise stunt. Yeah, yeah. This isn't a stunt movie, that's his Mission Impossible stunt. It's like 10 minutes, uninterrupted cut that felt virtuoso. His his big like, guys, I'm fucking Tom Cruise and this is my Oscar moment. And then we re-watched it. No, it has multiple cuts. Yeah, the scenes are like two minutes long, it's still long cuts, but he cut, and why I want to say that is because Alejandro is back on top form. He learned, he learned that it is better. Editing is an art, exactly. It's part of the scene, it proves your scene.
SPEAKER_00It's a tool, motherfucker.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, it would be braggadocious, and it would be cool to talk about Tom Cruise did this scene 10 minutes uninterrupted, but it wouldn't be as impactful as in the moment.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It would now be calling attention to itself if it was a winner.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02Like the Revenant or Bird.
SPEAKER_00Like it is. That's but it's not. So that means it's fucking successful.
SPEAKER_02You did you did film. Like you you film the film. You use the language and the tools. I was like, you got out of your own way, and I I almost want to guarantee that's Tom Fucking Cruise coming going, You gotta cut. Yeah, it's better cut. Yeah, I get it's cool. It has more impact. I get it's cool. Yeah, and I would love to brag too, because I can do this all day and night. I can climb on top of things, I can fall on boots, mind you. Yeah, I can do all of this.
SPEAKER_00But it's about beats, it's better. And it's about rhythm.
SPEAKER_02Cut, exactly, because this is the scene, like people are like, is this a musical?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because there's a rhythm to it, and that's Tom Cruise going, This is a music, this is our dance number. Yeah. You fucking cut to the beats. Yeah, you do build-ups, you release tension, you do what a film director, artist is supposed to do, and you get out of the way. This isn't your scene, this is the movie's scene in play to what we need to get across. Yeah, it's and it felt so good to see those cuts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, and there there's I know I know a how I think the audience knows how I often feel about things that have uh meta elements in them. Yeah. And there's definitely meta elements in this, and there's definitely indulgent moments in this, but they're all intentional and they're all to tell a specific kind of story, yeah. Which is why it's so successful, I think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um I think people that don't like Alejandro, people that don't like Tom Cruise, people that don't think the trailer's good, people that are. Yeah, go see our audience needs to go see it. See this movie because even if you don't like it, there's a lot to talk about.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Even if you go, I I think the message is bad, or I think what it's saying is nasty, that's a conversation to have. This is a film that means a lot to me. This is a type of film that means a lot to me. It doesn't all the way feel like it's telling me something, it's making me think of something. Yeah, that's not easy to do. No, and Alejandro hasn't been the guy to do that ever. He is melodrama, yeah, he is heavy-handed. This movie makes me think of things, and I'm trying to piece together not a puzzle, but like, how do I feel? What do I think is right or wrong? What do I agree or disagree?
SPEAKER_00He's playing with a lot of ideas, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it does it well enough where it is in your head weeks after I've already seen it. I'm still like, I wonder this means this to me. How do I feel about it talking about that? Yeah, there's a lot, even if you hate it, and if you've gone sour to Alejandro, please go watch this movie because yeah, like Nick said, I think it's his best.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. So we'll we'll maybe we'll talk spoilers sometime if a guest comes on or something. But yeah, we would rather just everyone go and see it. Please go see it. Because it's fucking psychic. The sound design's so fucking cool. So cool. It's a really good movie, man. Yeah, really, really awesome.
SPEAKER_02And honestly, I'm so glad it's good. Yeah, I think people were hoping Tom Cruise was just gonna suck it up and again, he's a one-trick pony.
SPEAKER_00He ain't. No, no, and yeah, it's gonna for a couple years people are gonna beat up on it, but in the end, it's a fucking awesome movie, and it was made and it was.
SPEAKER_02This will s this will stand for uh this is people can still talk about it much longer than a lot of other movies. Yeah. And uh people are trying to compare it to other movies, and I'm like, those movies won't be discussed for as long as this one will, for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yep, for sure. Yes, go see it, please. Yeah, and it'd make for a great conversation uh with well, especially the people that listen to this podcast. For this week's Nick asks William a question that isn't about Nick. Uh, I want to go with a classic because I'm genuinely curious, and I we might have talked about it at some point during the podcast, uh, the the years, the 200 and some odd episodes that we've done. Uh-huh. But it's a good playground one, which is fun to ask an adult who's nearly 40. Yeah. But if you could have a superpower, what would it be?
SPEAKER_02I think I always in my head go classic telekinesis, move things, pick things up.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So the ability to manipulate objects with your mind. Yeah. Okay. So not telepathy. No. But telekinesis. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Classic. Simple. Yeah. Because usually sometimes that can be a compound power, like psychic powers. Telekinesis, blah, blah, blah, psionics or whatever they want to call them. But yours is simply manipulate objects with brain.
SPEAKER_02Just that one. If I'm building a superhero, maybe I get more, but if I get one power, okay, it's that one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, in real life, yes. I would love to do that. You wish you could just open a door. The force.
SPEAKER_02I absolutely love to throw things away from my couch and collect my urine from my dick while I'm sitting and to transport it to the toilet and flush it without getting up. I would love that so much. That's beautiful to me. Yeah, not like flyers. It's mostly pissing sitting in the living room. And I'll get a beer from the fresh. Nah. No, just take the doo-doo out of your butt. Yeah, if I could pull turds from my butt no matter where I'm at, in the middle of a work presentation, to pull turds and drag them across the floor where no one can see. But go put them in the bathroom. I don't care. I can poop not leaving the room. Why would you have a job? No, I still have a normal life, and I'm standing in front of somebody, and then I pull a turd down my pant leg, and you can see it like a mouse scurrying on the floor. I'm trying to drag it to the trash can or the toilet without anyone noticing. I think I nailed it and everyone's disgusted. They're like, it would be better if you shit your pants and contained it in your clothes. The fact you're you're pulling it out and moving it around the room. Everyone's mad at me. And I'm like, no, you don't get to have superpowers. I touched an alien rock. You think you're doing a good job with your presentation, but you're just like, I stopped talking for two straight minutes. My ribs hurt. Yeah. Yeah, that'd be my superpower. I'd love that. That'd make my life better. That's an upgrade.
SPEAKER_00It's a classic one. It's a classic choice. Yeah, pulling turds, yeah. And unique, because I've never thought that that's what it would be used for. But hey, you know, it's your power. It's it's yours to wield any uh which way you seem fit. Oh, Jesus Christ. Oh, fucker. So season two, Diculous. Season two of Attack on Titan. Three episodes? Yes. Thankfully. And I think there's only 12 episodes. Yeah, it's a shorter season. Which already has much, much, much better pacing than the first season. So that's great. I'm very happy with that.
SPEAKER_02Huge changes. New intro song, new intro. Uh the the visuals, uh, there's animals in the intro now. Yeah. Which I was like, nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Don't want to think too much about it, but yeah, exactly. Don't try not to look into it. Same dim different end credits. Yep. There's definitely, I don't know if it's a different animation studio. I need to look it up. It might not be, but it looks like they have more money for sure. Less still frames. Yeah, but no CG belt. Guys, the CG bell's gone. They heard there was a CG bell. There was. And then there was CG horses as well. But damn it. Um I only noticed still frames in the third episode. I was like, I because I it took that long for me to click, be like, oh shit, I haven't seen a still frame. And then there was like a couple. Yeah. So I'm like, oh, this isn't fucking distracting like it was. We don't have so many people fucking monologuing while they're just doing a single action. There's a little bit of that. But it's still an anime. It's all still there. True, true, true, true. Less. Yeah. And I'm much preferring the non-mini arc. There's only 12 episodes. So they're not doing part one, blah, blah, blah, part two, blah, blah, blah. As funny as those titles were at the beginning of that season, by the end of it, I'm like, fuck all this. Yeah. So it's nice that they haven't done that so far. And then this is just, oh, this is this episode, this episode, this episode. We're not focusing on stretching out a story that could have been told in two episodes into fucking six episodes.
SPEAKER_02To make it like an event, I guess, would be the thought. I don't know. But here's the other thing this did that made me very excited. Just throw something at me that doesn't make sense and go, yeah, this is what happens now. There's a giant monkey man, beast titan, and he speaks English.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and is smart.
SPEAKER_02And he walks away, and I was just like, I'm intrigued. You you hooked me. Yeah. I don't know anything about that, and I want to know everything about that. And this episode did that multiple times.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02Where it kept doing something, going, hey, guess what? This world's bigger than what I've told you. Here's a thing you've never even thought was gonna be here, and now that's here. But we're not gonna talk about it that much. I'm showing you for the sake of the viewer. We're on to the next.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's a lot of grabs my attention. Intriguing details. Yeah, minus the beast titan, I think is what they call him. Giant weird monkey man who speaks and is intelligent and can order the other formals uh around, but he doesn't seem violent or anything like that. Well, I guess he did kill the horse. But yeah, um he's still a badass. He's still a titan. And then the thing which my brain didn't even fucking process with the teaser at the end of the first season.
SPEAKER_02I thought it was a hole in the wall and there was the titan on the other side watching.
SPEAKER_00That's exactly what I thought. Nah.
SPEAKER_02And then there's a titan in the wall.
SPEAKER_00They're like, what, what? And then the scientist lady is like, oh, I examine the brick that the walls are made out of, and it's the same material that the crystal female Titan crystallized herself into. So it's like what?
SPEAKER_01It's like indestructible.
SPEAKER_00So there's like Titans in the walls and the religious guy who's got his congregation completely fucking flattened into season one, whose name is Nick as well. Okay. Uh he means he's a nonce. Is like hell bent on not giving them any information. Because he knows. Yeah, he saw the answers.
SPEAKER_02Whatever you do, don't let the sunlight touch that fucking head. Yeah. And so they covered it up with a big giant quilt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he's in the know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he will not tell them anything. He was like, Yeah, no, I I won't tell it. I love God. Let me go see him. Kill me, please. I dare you. That's my dream.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he holds the secret the to the truth of what is going on higher than the ex like the extermination of humanity, basically. He's like, nah. I can't. I'm sworn to it. There's some girl you guys can go look for who we get introduced to, and he's like, Yeah, she's the key to it all. It's just like, all right, so she's just some other rich girl who was expressing.
SPEAKER_02And they're like, what does that mean?
SPEAKER_00It's like that's for you to figure out. I was got. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I already figured it out. What you don't know, he's doing that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. So yeah, lots of intriguing world opening things happening. That still don't make sense. Nope.
SPEAKER_02But Titan was talking, the other Titan on that dude's house that crushes Jamie's house.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh then there's like a medium-sized Titan in the girls' village eating people.
SPEAKER_02Very disturbing looking.
SPEAKER_00Well, that was the first time that they were actually creepy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02There was a few things in this episode that I thought was like, that's really creepy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because they only have that was only creeped out in the first season by that crawling one. Spider one. But that this one was actually like actually disconcerting. I was like, ugh, what the fuck?
SPEAKER_02Because it's like nine feet tall. And he's just munching on that lady. Yeah. Just chewing. And the kids watching. Yeah. And the person they're chewing. Sounds alive.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Very disturbing. Yeah, yeah. Um, and yeah, they're really going for odd body shapes now and weird heads moving.
SPEAKER_02Or hold on, hold on, hold on. Let me get this right. Big, stupid, idiot fish face titan was the note I took. Yes. Yeah. Big stupid idiot fish face face. I believe that's what they call him. Yeah, I saw it in the credits.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it's I I'm digging it. I'm digging it. I'm liking it more.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what's going on. Nope. But that's a positive now. Exactly. Because I want to know.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02And they know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The creators of the show, they know what's going on. I'm back to the feeling of I'm in good hands. I lost that for a little bit. I'm back to that of like, oh yeah, if you guys are teasing this in episode in the early episodes, that means we're gonna get to some crazy stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The Titans can work in night, which they thought was impossible.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Because they're sunlight, and now they're attacking in the middle of the night, and everyone's like, wait, why? Or how?
SPEAKER_00I mean, the sunlight off is reflecting off the moon, so they gotta be getting a little bit of power, but but I don't know. I don't know if that's what the answer is. But how's the beast talking? Why does it look like a beast? Yeah, is it someone driving it?
SPEAKER_02What is also where's it going? What's it trying to do?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's climbing over the wall. Yeah, I yeah, no fucking clue.
SPEAKER_02The girl subplot of her village and her dad and the bow and arrow, that whole bit was so much fun to watch.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, there's some fucking great lines from that. Yeah, she's a cool character. It's like don't expect to ask help or don't expect to get help from people you turn your back on and all that stuff. It's like yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, from her and her dad talking. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, there's some there's some some some good lines there, and we get to see yeah, glimpses into these people's backstories and who they are, and a little bit of the more of the class system, which they're still kind of doing, even though you know we're outside of of uh the big city, but yeah, even just like oh yeah, you're shitty little villages over here, and yeah, it's actually well paced, yeah. Good amount of information being released in each episode. Yeah, we're just getting it in it's there's a little bit of like, oh, we're introducing all these new characters who are gonna be relevant, you know, which is like yeah, okay. So it feels like they can't they're not doing much with the main characters, yeah. Okay, but that's okay. I mean, we'll we'll we'll get to it, I'm sure. New setting, new group.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, for sure. Yeah, again, I'm I'm okay, but we got 12 episodes. I'm sure we're gonna get plenty of Aaron and uh Pikazu.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. For sure.
SPEAKER_02How many more times can I say for sure, William? It felt good. It felt good watching them, except I have one problem, and we talked about this before we started recording. I completely forgot the third episode. Yeah, like I just lost it out of my brain. The only thing I can remember from the third was the night stuff because I really liked them with the torches and the guy being scared in the dark, and then having the image of all the titans around. I was like, that again, they're being creepy, this is cool. They're playing with suspense and tension more.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this looks cool. They're playing with different types of visuals. There's also one commercial break where when we learn that the beast titan can talk, and that captain guy who's supposed to be really good is like terrified and cannot fucking speak because he's beyond terrified. And as the beast titan like tells him, he's like, Oh, so you're just too scared to or whatever. And then he sticks the Titans on him, and right before the commercial, they cut to like a fucking the little titans are eating him, and then it's like a red background, and they just like pull him apart, and then it cuts to commercial or whatever.
SPEAKER_02So it's just like it's a pure red panel, essentially, and they do it later in another episode, but pure blue. Yes, like they're they're getting creative with how they're doing stuff, yeah, changing it up.
SPEAKER_00It's more visually interesting for sure. God damn it. For sure. But it's bodes well. Bodes well.
SPEAKER_02It's it feels good, good intro and less episodes. Yes, it it feels like we're we're we're gonna click with this season more than the first season.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, taking some steps in the right direction, and I hope that it keeps it up because yeah, I was really struggling with that first season, but I'll forgive a bad first season. Like I said, it was just felt very long, and I mean this is where shit ramps up, and then season three is supposed to be really fucking good. So I I hope that uh continues on this trajectory. Uh do you have any random things or any uh yeah?
SPEAKER_02I thought it was funny um when the girl with the bow and arrow was trying to kill the the titan coming after her, she trumped his ass and was trying to go for a headshot and just grazed his ear.
SPEAKER_00Ah, and they I like the rewind to twelve hours earlier in Yeah, that was fun. Where it's like actually shows the animation rewinding now, it's fun and creative.
SPEAKER_02Loved, yeah, episode two cutting back to the horse scouts telling multiple stories at the same time. Yeah. It was like and I don't need someone to say it out loud. Exactly. You just cut back. And I was like, yes, thank you. Just go. Just keep moving. I'll keep up.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. There was a guy who when they're gonna leave at the in the first episode, and I think it's maybe he's with like Mika's and those guys, but he's some random guy, and they're like, Hey man, we we we gotta get out of here, we gotta go here. And he there's a beat, and he goes, Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world. I'm like, that guy's suspicious. Yeah, that guy's a fucking titan or something. I don't know who that is, but yeah, it took a fucking beat on him. Yeah, I noticed that too. Yeah, I didn't like it. I'm like, that guy's a titan.
SPEAKER_02Also, uh a few moments of like really different or good uh music to the scenes. There was like an alarm noise in the music with the horse riding in episode one. This is cool, yeah. And then there's like organ music for the Sasha bit, the girl with the bow and arrow. Like that was also good music, and it was different than just the weird Japanese power metal. For sure. I was like, ah, yeah, I'm liking this.
SPEAKER_00So at one point they mentioned, oh, the titans have been protecting us from other titans. I'm like, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
SPEAKER_02I'm assuming the wall. But what is that even using them as the wall, so they're wrapping their head around we're using titans to protect ourselves from titans. Oh like they're still figuring out how trippy this is. I see, I see, I see. I'm dumb. I liked in episode three the guy says, hey, back off to a Titan. I thought I just that was so stupid but funny to me.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, the horse noises, just standard horse noises that are must be in like a Japanese uh sound library because it's literally Apona's sound for a period of time. So it's been around since at least that video game. That's so funny. One of them is just like, oh yeah, that's a Pona, yeah. Nick clocked it immediately. Immediately Apona, where's Apona? And it was last season too. There was one of them in last season, I forgot to say that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm still very intrigued and excited that there's this stupid weird religion for the three walls.
SPEAKER_00And then now that there's Titans inside the wall, I'm like, okay, this is gonna get so they're worshiping Titans, which again, I think it ties into rich cabal yeah, uh, people on the Epstein files have created uh the Titans by experimenting on children or something. You know what I mean? It's got it's gotta be something like that, and especially with religion. I mean, you know, catching it.
SPEAKER_02There's always exploitation and yeah, manipulation of people, it's gotta be something like that. And then uh for what feels like maybe the third time so far, it does end with Aaron grabbing the key, going, Oh yeah, I gotta get to my dad's cellar. I think how far are we away to the universe is gonna be in that cellar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so go to the fucking cellar. Like, is that what maybe they're on their way to the cellar now? I think they said something, but I'm like, where are we? I don't understand I still don't understand the geography. Like I need a very deep the outskirts of the the towns. Now they're out in the fields. But I know in those fields, but then there's that's still walls, so they only have cities that are close to the walls, but then in between there's like farmland and all this kind of shit. Yeah, I just need a better Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We need one more of the better map, interstitial cut commercial things of the map, and a point that says you are here. Exactly. That would help a lot legitimately.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just want to see how it is because in those the ones that have come out, it just looked like oh, it's city, city, city, city, wall, wall, but it's like no, there's giant open spaces, farmland, and we know that they're coming from somewhere because that's we didn't mention this in the episode so far, but they're like, Oh, the wall was breached, and no, it wasn't. So they've come out of somewhere, where the fuck are they coming from? So I just like I just want to know where we are in relation to every everywhere else.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, don't we? Wow, you said it. Preach, brother, preach.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we will three again, do three again, especially since it's 12 episodes. We'll just have four episodes of this covering season two. So yeah, fingers crossed season two keeps getting better with its promise of strong start, yeah. So definitely much more engaging, much more enjoyable than anything in season one. Honestly, I think these three episodes are better than anything that's any one episode in season one, to be honest.
SPEAKER_02I would say maybe just because I can't think of anything. None came to mind of like, no, this was better. Like, there's more action so far in the there's other action scenes, but like, no, this these are three very fun to watch episodes.
SPEAKER_00Just more interesting war, yeah, much better paced. So, yeah, hopefully it'll it'll keep it up. And yeah, we'll be back next week to talk about episodes four, five, and six of season two of Attack on Titan. I love you, I love you too.
